Helping parents and players make sense of minor hockey terms.
Rep (Representative Hockey)
Competitive teams that represent the association at higher skill levels. Players attend tryouts and may travel for games and tournaments.
House (Recreational Hockey)
Non-tiered, local teams focused on fun, skill development, and inclusivity. No tryouts, balanced teams, and minimal travel.
Tiers (Tier 1-4)
Used in rep hockey to group teams by competitive level:
Tier 1 (AAA) - Elite level
Tier 2 (AA) - Advanced competitive
Tier 3 (A) - Intermediate competitive
Tier 4 (B) - Entry-level competitive
Note: Not all regions or associations offer all tiers.
AAA, AA, A
Designations for high-performance hockey:
AAA - Top-tier elite teams, often regional or provincial
AA - Very strong competitive level
A - Competitive but more accessible
These teams usually involve more travel and commitment.
C Division (House/Rec)
Recreational division with no tryouts. Most new players start here. Often referred to as "House C."
Development (Dev)
Programs focused on additional skill-building and early competition exposure. U11 Development (formerly Atom Dev) is a common entry point for competitive players.
OMAHA
Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association - The regional league authority for teams in the Revelstoke area. Governs scheduling and league structure.
BC Hockey
The provincial body that governs minor hockey in BC. Oversees registration, certification, transfers, and policy enforcement.
North Zone
A regional program made up of players from multiple minor hockey associations (like Revelstoke, Salmon Arm, Vernon, etc.) who combine to form tiered regional teams at U13, U15, U18 levels. These teams offer a high level of play and typically require tryouts and increased travel.
Affiliate Player (AP)
A player registered on one team but eligible to play with a higher-level team when needed. Often used for development and depth.
V3V Tournament
A fast-paced 3-on-3 style tournament, often held in the off-season or as a fun development event. Games are played with fewer players on the ice, creating more puck touches, open ice, and scoring chances. The V3V Tournament is popular for skill-building, creativity, and fun competition in a shorter game format.
Tryouts
Evaluations held before the season for rep teams. Coaches assess skills, positions, and team fit before finalizing rosters.
